What’s great today? Here’s what:

  • Ex-agent Nathan Bransford (@nathanbransford) provides both caution and encouragement when he writes Social Media is an Imperfect Sales Tool. Use it Anyway. I will disagree a little with one thing he writes: that social media is free. Yes, it’s free financially. It is NOT free from a time-spent perspective. That’s a cost, too.
  • Speaking of getting the word out, being a guest speaker–introduction: With Us Here Tonight…– is another way to do it, as Jan Dunlap reminds us on WordServe Water Cooler.
  • If what you’re getting the word out about is a self-published book, then the survey of over 1,000 self-pubbed authors, compiled by Dave Cornford (@david_the_c) and Steven Lewis (@rule17) over at the Taleist blog and about to be published by Amazon on the 24th, should be very interesting. At last, real data on what’s happening in the self-publishing world. Big thanks to Joel Friedlander (@JFbookman) at The Book Designer for announcing this.
  • Now this is too much fun. Staples–yes, Staples, the office supply store–has an interactive reading-speed test you can take. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the simulated e-reader to select the font size, test length (4-15 paragraphs, more is more accurate), and the excerpt (War of the Worlds, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, or The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), click Done, then click Start Reading. When you’re done, you’ll get a measure of how many words per minute you read, how that compares to the national average, and how long it would take you to read War and Peace at that rate. Hmm: I wonder if more modern books would produce different scores. Thanks to Robert Bruce (@robertbruce76) at 101 Books for finding this.
